New York - Another day, another GOP attack on an idea they once championed.
Today New York State Democratic Party Co-Chair Dave Pollak called on Senate Republicans to stop their now three day old obstruction campaign and work with Governor Spitzer to address issues vital to New York's economic future.
"On Wednesday the Governor proposed a plan to get at the root cause and finally solve New York's property tax crisis - an idea long championed by Senator Dean Skelos. The commission the Governor proposed will be chaired by Skelos's home county executive Tom Suozzi. But today Skelos made clear he's not interested in advancing one of his own priorities if it means working with the Governor," said Pollak.
Pollak was referring to an article in today's New York Times where Skelos, the Senate Republicans Deputy Majority Leader expressed opposition to the Governor's proposal for a Moreland Commission to address New York's property tax crisis.
In the article Skelos said, "You don't need a commission, quite frankly, to tell the people in, whether it's Westchester or Long Island, that property taxes are strangling them….People are looking in all suburban communities right now for real property tax relief, not commissions to study it again."
"Three days after the Governor laid out a bold vision for New York, this is sadly the response we are coming to expect. It's a new year, but apparently Senate Republicans plan to play from the same tired old playbook of partisan obstruction," said Pollak.
Skelos's comments come two days after his GOP colleague George Winner attacked the Governor's plan to make high quality higher education affordable for every New Yorker and a childish display of rudeness from Senate Republicans on the Senate floor during the Governor's speech that the New York Times referred to as "pouting".
