Flashback Friday: On Hurricane Sandy's Anniversary, Zeldin Halted Long Island Resiliency Project To Help Trump’s Mar-A-Lago
New York, NY - As New York State commemorates the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and works to advance critical resiliency projects, it’s important to remember that Long Island Congressman Lee Zeldin chose his fealty to Trump over his own constituents’ needs when the time came to help his local district on those same projects.
According to the New York Post, Zeldin said his home district’s “critical Fire Island beach-replenishment project would be halted so the crew could respond to an ‘emergency’ near Mar-a-Lago.”
Turns out, there was no emergency at Mar-A-Lago, but Zeldin re-routed two dredges to Palm Beach anyway, causing frustration among his constituents. “Locals in Fire Island, whose homes and property remain under threat, were less than thrilled with Zeldin’s position.” One told the Post that Zeldin was “trying to walk a tightrope between defending the interests of Long Islanders while also appeasing his ‘Republican friends.’”
“As Governor Kathy Hochul and New York State Democrats announce critical resiliency and replenishment projects to repair the State from Hurricane Sandy’s effects, Lee Zeldin was once again missing in action for his constituents in order to gain political points from disgraced President Trump,” said New York State Democratic Party Chairman Jay S. Jacobs. “Zeldin put the needs of Donald Trump and his resort before his own constituents, and it should be no surprise that he will do the same if elected Governor.”
