New York Democratic Party Launches “New Yorkers Against Extreme Lee” Statewide Tour

NEW YORK, NY - As the fall campaign season kicks off, the New York State Democratic Party today launched a “New Yorkers Against Extreme Lee” statewide tour to highlight how New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin’s extreme positions and MAGA agenda are a clear and present danger to New Yorkers.

Events will feature local leaders holding Lee Zeldin accountable for his anti-abortion views, support for Trump’s far-right agenda and history of propelling Trump’s hate-filled, conspiracy-fueled lies, and his opposition to commonsense gun safety measures. The tour will make stops in major cities across New York State, and specific details will be announced closer to the event dates.

“As the fall campaign season kicks off, New Yorkers across the state are coming together to reject Lee Zeldin’s far-right views and extremist platform,” said NYS Democratic Party Chairman Jay S. Jacobs. “Whether it’s Zeldin’s anti-abortion views, support for Trump’s far-right agenda, or opposition to gun safety measures that keep New Yorkers safe, Lee Zeldin is too dangerous and too extreme for New York.”

Lee Zeldin voted against the certification of the 2020 presidential election — even defending his position on the House floor hours after the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol — and has ties with far-right extremist groups that attended and helped lead the attack.

Lee Zeldin can’t fool New Yorkers: he has stood in lockstep with Donald Trump since day one — supporting the former president’s dangerous MAGA agenda and propelling his hate-filled, conspiracy-fueled lies. Not only did Zeldin fall in line with Trump on guns, abortion, and other critical issues, but he also led efforts against Trump’s impeachment, voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election results, and refused to support an investigation into the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

If elected governor, Zeldin has made it clear that he will adopt the same malicious, anti-democratic playbook Trump weaponized for four years. New Yorkers can’t afford to go back to Donald Trump’s far-right agenda.

In April, Zeldin hosted the New York Right to Life Party and said that the anti-abortion advocates would have “open-door” access to his administration if elected governor. He even said appointing a pro-life health commissioner would be a “great idea.”

In Congress, Zeldin supported abortion bans without exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. He also joined Republicans in signing an amicus brief demanding the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade and celebrated the bench’s Dobbs decision as “a victory.”

New York is currently leading the nation in defending abortion rights, but if elected governor, Lee Zeldin has promised to push a far-right, anti-abortion agenda that will severely restrict New Yorkers’ ability to make their own health decisions and access reproductive health care.

Zeldin is dangerously out of step with New York on gun safety, and he can’t be trusted to keep us safe. His backward, far-right positions on guns would put New Yorkers and our communities at risk.

During a campaign rally in Rochester two weeks before the Buffalo shooting, Lee Zeldin said New York State should “repeal red flag laws,” and that people should “have a right to stand [their] ground.” Zeldin continues to tout his efforts to overturn New York's SAFE Act and praised the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the state’s strict concealed carry requirements. His running mate further described commonsense gun safety measures as “distractions,” showing this ticket is not serious about keeping New Yorkers safe.
