On Rochester Stop of “New Yorkers Against Extreme Lee” Statewide Tour, Democrats Highlight Lee Zeldin’s Record of Far-Right Extremism, Dangerous Anti-Abortion Views

New York, NY - Today, as part of the New York Democratic Party’s “New Yorkers Against Extreme Lee” tour, local Democratic leaders in Rochester highlighted New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin’s far-right views on abortion, opposition to commonsense gun safety measures, and his extreme, MAGA agenda that is too dangerous for New York.

Speakers included New York State Assemblymembers Harry Bronson, Jen Lunsford and Demond Meeks, Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo, and 1199SEIU Vice President Tracey Harrison.

“Where Donald Trump leads, Lee Zeldin follows. Zeldin made a name for himself by spreading dangerous lies about the 2020 election, and has long-standing connections to far-right militant and anti-government groups involved in the January 6 Insurrection,” said Assemblymember Harry Bronson. “If elected, I have no doubt that Lee Zeldin will adopt the same malicious, anti-democratic playbook Trump weaponized for four years. New Yorkers can’t afford to go back to Donald Trump’s far-right agenda.”

“Time and time again, Lee Zeldin has shown that his loyalties lie with Donald Trump, not with New Yorkers,” said Assemblymember Jen Lunsford. “He made a name for himself making baseless claims of election fraud, and even before the dust settled on January 6, he subverted the will of the people by refusing to certify presidential election results in Pennsylvania and Arizona. Lee Zeldin’s pro-MAGA extremism is bad for democracy and bad for New York.”

“A gun violence epidemic has swept the nation and our state, and Lee Zeldin would put New York’s communities at risk with his extreme positions opposing commonsense gun laws,” said Assemblymember Demond Meeks. “Zeldin wants to repeal our Red Flag laws, and even opposed the federal bipartisan agreement on gun control. He will undo the progress we have made to protect our neighborhoods, putting New Yorkers in harm's way. Lee Zeldin cannot be trusted to keep us safe.”

“New Yorkers won’t allow Lee Zeldin to turn back the clock on our reproductive rights,”  said Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo. “In Congress, Lee Zeldin had a long record of supporting anti-abortion measures, and he has promised to appoint an anti-choice health commissioner if elected. We must continue to stand up and loudly say that we will not go back, and women and families deserve access to every toll their physician may need to save their life. Abortion is and will always be healthcare. New Yorkers should also not overlook the fact that while Lee Zeldin continues to push baseless conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, his campaign is also under a criminal investigation for attempting to defraud New York voters. Zeldin's actions are not only hypocritical, but they also pose a dangerous threat to our democracy. New Yorkers must reject Zeldin’s brand of MAGA extremism this November.”

"Lee Zeldin is out of touch with New Yorkers and represents the extreme right wing of the Republican Party, voting to overturn the 2020 election and the best interest of New Yorkers," said 1199 SEIU Vice President Tracey Harrison. "We must reject Extreme Lee and embrace Governor Hochul who is working for all New Yorkers. The choice could not be more clear for voters this November."
