Statement from Chairman Jay S. Jacobs on Yesterday's Insurrection

For Immediate Release: January 7, 2021

NEW YORK, NY: New York State Democratic Party Chairman Jay S. Jacobs has released the following statement:

"We cannot forget that four people died yesterday in an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that can only be described as a failed coup attempt. Their deaths, the embarrassment of our whole nation, and the threat to our 244 year old democracy can only be laid at the feet of President Trump and those who aided and abetted his seditious attempt to undo the results of the 2020 Presidential Election. Trump spent months claiming he could only lose if the election were rigged. Then, when he lost by more than 7 million votes, he began a campaign of lies to convince his supporters that he, in fact, won a “landslide” victory that was being stolen from him and them. As Republican Senators, Romney, Graham, McConnell, Lee and so many others made clear last night, there never was any election fraud and Trump is nothing but a sore loser.

Trump fanned the flames of that lie and invited his adherents to come to Washington on January 6th – the date set for the Certification of the Electoral College vote – and promised as early as December 19th, that it would be “wild.” Well, wild it was. First his sons, then his attorney, Rudy Giuliani, and finally Trump himself spoke to the crowd and urged them to march on the Capitol. Giuliani called for “trial by combat” while his son shouted “we’re coming for you!” What was it that Trump, who purposefully failed to call out the National Guard to protect our lawmakers and the building we all revere, had in mind? What did he expect or hope would be the outcome? What was his end game for yesterday’s call to action? It was nothing other than to stop the certification of Joe Biden & Kamala Harris and to overthrow the lawfully elected government, due to take office on January 20th.

Complicit in these crimes against our country are Missouri Senator Josh Hawley and Texas Senator Ted Cruz. They should both resign. All New Yorkers should be embarrassed by the votes in support of Hawley, Cruz and Trump taken by four of our members of Congress to oppose the certification of the Electoral College vote. Representatives Lee Zeldin, Nicole Malliotakis, Elise Stefanik and Chris Jacobs have not only violated their oath of office, they have disgraced the districts and state that they represent. I call on all four to resign today. Supporting a lie that you know to be false has consequences, as we can see clearly today. There are four dead bodies that are testament to how serious those consequences can be. After doing what they did to support that lie and the narcissistic authoritarian in the White House who wanted to cling to power, none of those Senators or Representatives should ever again have the audacity to place hand over heart and recite the words “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands . . .” Yesterday they established that they do not and their treachery will be forever recorded in the annals of history."
