Statement from NYS Democratic Chairman on Anti-Asian American Violence
For Immediate Release: March 18, 2021
NASSAU COUNTY, NY: New York State Democratic Party Chairman Jay S. Jacobs has released the following statement:
"Having read all of the condemnations of the current epidemic of violence against Asian Americans, I ask the question: what has caused this new hate-motivated phenomenon? Only by understanding the cause can we find a solution to end these vile, senseless and, frankly, stupid attacks on good, decent American citizens. We all know the cause. It was caused by Donald Trump’s effort to “Make America Great Again” by tearing down and denigrating anyone whose vilification could build him up with the base he needed to get reelected. That’s why when the coronavirus attacked America and his own ineptitude resulted in deaths piling up by the hundreds of thousands, Trump named it the “China virus” or the “Kung Flu” to deflect people’s anger from his failings to the Chinese or anyone who might resemble them. It was reckless, stupid and mean-spirited. And, it has exacted a heavy price; more innocent lives taken.
Make no mistake about it: The Republican Members of the House of Representatives who voted against a benign resolution condemning violence against Asian Americans, in the name of protecting Trump, were enabling Trump.1 While they may not be technically responsible for the violence that has stained America, they are complicit in not helping to stop it – just as they were complicit in the insurrection and rioting that took at least five lives on January 6th in our nation’s capital when they refused to denounce the “big lie” about the election and even help to spread it.
Words are important. Words have consequences. If we want to end the violence we have to end the hate. If we want to end the hate then everyone – Democrats AND Republicans – need to stand up and let the morons who would do violence to our own innocent American citizens know that they are the ones who are Un-American."
1H.Res.908 - 116th Congress (2019-2020): 4 Current Republican NY Members of Congress – Elise Stefanik, Lee Zeldin, Chris Jacobs, and Tom Reed all voted against this resolution.
