Statement from NYS Democratic Chairman on President Biden's and Vice President Harris' Leadership on Voting Rights
For Immediate Release: January 11, 2022
NASSAU COUNTY, NY: During a powerful speech in Atlanta today, President Biden and Vice President Harris forcefully advocated for protecting the right to vote, ensuring free, fair, and secure elections, and changing the Senate rules to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. In response, New York State Democratic Party Chair Jay S. Jacobs released the following statement:
"Today, President Biden and Vice President Harris doubled down on their unshakeable commitment to defending Americans’ right to vote and ensuring that every election is free, fair, and secure. As President Biden has said, the battle for the soul of America is a fight we will win, and we are proud to stand with him as he continues to fight for Americans’ fundamental right to vote in the face of Republican obstructionism. Here in New York, we know firsthand the stakes of this fight as we’ve seen Republican lawmakers shamelessly try to pass restrictive voter legislation because they know they cannot win on the merits of their ideas.
The U.S. House of Representatives has taken decisive action to protect our democracy, and now it’s time for the Senate to follow suit. The New York State Democratic Party calls on every member of the U.S. Senate to join President Biden and Vice President Harris in this commitment and pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect our elections and secure the right to vote for all Americans."
